Malta, Private Tours, up to 4h

2. VALLETTA & BIRGU – IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MALTESE KNIGHTS

Valletta & Birgu – In the footsteps of the Knights of St. John. This private, half – day guided tour begins at the newly refurbished Triton Fountain, just outside the entrance to the nation’s capital.

The Triton fountain itself a symbol of the island nation’s bond with the sea. It is here where you will meet your private tour guide who will commence the tour.

During this tour you will get the chance to see some of the most exciting and historic attraction these grand Maltese cities have to offer.

Undoubtably the most prevalent architecture in this this tour was built in baroque style which was adapted specifically on the islands by The Order of the Knights of St. John.

Originally Hospitallers in the holy land they would eventually settle in Malta.

The tour begins entering the new city gate of Valletta, built between 2011 and 2014, it is the fifth structure to be built to serve similar purposes on that same site.

Repurposed, renewed architecture characterises the city with many buildings serving a modern-day purpose, such as the first attraction on the visit, The Palace of the Grand Masters which currently serves as the Presidential palace.

In Valletta, the tour will also allow the participants to marvel at the New Parliament Building which today holds active sessions of the Maltese House of Parliament.

You will then take a ferry across the Grand Harbour, which was also built by the Knights, towards the three cities, Isla, Senglea and the former seat of the Order, Birgu.

Visiting Senglea, the tour will visit Gardjola Gardens, boasting the former watchtower built at incredible vantage point at the very tip of the city’s bastions.

Although the Ottoman Empire are no longer a threat, participants of the tour can view a splendid panorama of Valletta’s Fort St. Angelo over the Grand Harbour.

The tour then goes to Birgu, a heavily fortified city which housed one of the most notable bases for the Knights, succeeding in repelling the Ottoman empire during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.

After this conflict, Brigu was given the title “Città Vittoriosa”, The Victorious City to commemorate this event. It is occasionally referred to by this name.

It was also a settlement before the arrival of the knights, in fact it is one of the oldest on the island with many former invaders settling on the shores.

This was due to Malta’s deep, natural harbours which could house far larger navies than similar spaces in other locations ever could. This is yet another reason many different peoples have attempted to occupy the Islands.

It is here where you can find many film locations, such as Fort St. Angelo, which portrayed the “Red Fortress” in the highly acclaimed television series, “Game of Thrones”.

Completing the tour and saying goodbye to the guide is possible in either Birgu or in Valletta.
